Oregon Farm Bureau Welcomes Administration’s Overhaul of Bureau of Land Management Grazing Regulations
Salem, Ore. - Oregon Farm Bureau welcomes the Trump Administration's overhaul of Bureau of Land Management grazing regulations, which represent a meaningful step forward for Oregon's ranching families.
For many years, federal grazing policy has placed a disproportionate burden on permit holders while limiting the flexibility that ranchers need to respond to changing conditions on the ground. The proposed rule addresses this directly - allowing operators to adjust grazing practices without requiring separate BLM approval, enabling targeted grazing as a tool to reduce wildfire risk, and distributing rangeland health responsibilities more equitably across all BLM land uses rather than placing them solely on the backs of livestock producers.
“This is a needed return to reasonable use of our public lands,” said Dan Andersen, a rancher in Malheur County. “Wildfires have plagued communities for years due to regulations on public lands grazing. The loss of wildlife habitat and inability to maintain healthy ecosystems for all uses is inevitable when fire destroys the landscape.”
We are also encouraged by language expanding opportunities for beginning ranchers to participate in public lands grazing programs. Keeping the next generation connected is essential to the long-term viability of our cattle industry.
